Compost!

Become familiar with one of nature’s miracles:  Turning your food waste into a source of life-giving nutrients for your houseplants and vegetable garden.  Food waste accounts for nearly 17% of the municipal solid waste generated by Americans each year—that means 25.4 million tons of apple cores and pizza crusts.  In nature, organic waste decomposes naturally, distributing nutrients to surrounding organisms and continuing the circle of life, but when organic waste ends up in a landfill, that circle stops:  The waste decomposes very slowly and ends up contaminated with the toxic residues of other waste in the landfill.

Install your own backyard composting system—your hydrangeas and peace lilies will thank you!

Get personal with the land.  Give a little back to the soil that grows your food by nourishing it with your composted food scraps.
